There are only 2 things that keep the slide attached, the slide lock (part you pull down to disassemble) and the trigger bar engagement to the striker. If it doesn't, either the spring is broken, the lever is bent, or the spring is not sitting UNDER the locking block pin (meaning somebody probably didn't install the top pin before the lever).
